What Happened to Silver in 2011?

Silver reached $49.51 on April 28, 2011 — its highest price since the Hunt Brothers' manipulation in 1980. The rally was driven by QE2, dollar weakness, safe-haven demand from the Fukushima nuclear disaster, and speculative momentum. Silver then crashed 30% in five trading days (May 1-5) as COMEX raised margin requirements five times in nine days, triggering forced selling. The metal never recaptured its April high.
