Gold staged a brief recovery in early 2014 (Russia-Ukraine crisis, Crimea annexation) but faded as the USD strengthened and equity markets hit new highs. The prospect of Fed rate hikes (ending QE) weighed on gold throughout the year. ETF outflows continued. Gold ended the year essentially flat, down 1.7%.
