Gold hit a 26-year high of $725 in May 2006 driven by geopolitical tensions (Iran nuclear crisis), commodity supercycle momentum, and dollar weakness. A sharp correction in May-June wiped out much of the gain, but gold recovered strongly into year-end. Global central bank gold purchases accelerated.
