What Happened to Gold in 2011?

Gold reached its then-all-time high of $1,920.65 on September 6, 2011, driven by the US debt ceiling crisis, S&P's downgrade of US credit, and the deepening Eurozone crisis. However, gold then corrected sharply from its peak as the crisis stabilized and the ECB intervened. The average for 2011 was still the highest to that date at $1,573.
