What Happened to Gold in 2008?

Gold hit $1,011 in March 2008 (then a record) as Bear Stearns collapsed. The Lehman Brothers bankruptcy in September triggered a global financial crisis and gold initially fell sharply to $713 as investors liquidated everything. However, gold recovered strongly into year-end as the Fed launched QE1, closing above $850.
