About the South African Krugerrand
The South African Krugerrand holds the distinction of being the world's first modern bullion coin. Introduced in 1967 by the South African Reserve Bank and minted at the South African Mint, it was designed to help market the country's gold reserves to ordinary investors worldwide. Named after Boer War president Paul Kruger (obverse) and featuring a springbok antelope (reverse), the coin contains exactly 1 troy oz of pure gold alloyed with copper to the 22-karat (91.67%) standard — the same composition as the American Gold Eagle, which was modeled after it. The Krugerrand was banned from import in many Western countries during apartheid (1970s–1980s), but those restrictions ended in 1994. Today it is one of the most widely traded gold coins globally. Approximately 60 million Krugerrands have been sold since 1967, making it the most widely held bullion coin by total volume in history.
