About the American Gold Eagle
The American Gold Eagle is the official gold bullion coin of the United States, minted by the US Mint since 1986. It is alloyed with copper and silver to achieve its distinctive warm yellow color and durability. Each 1 oz coin contains exactly one troy ounce of pure gold (22 karat, 91.67% gold), making it IRS-eligible for Gold IRA accounts — a statutory exception despite not meeting the usual 99.5% IRA purity threshold. The obverse features Augustus Saint-Gaudens' iconic design of Lady Liberty with flowing hair and torch; the reverse depicts a family of nesting bald eagles. Gold Eagles are legal tender with a $50 face value. They are the most widely recognized and liquid gold coins in the United States, available in four sizes (1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz).
