About the American Silver Eagle (Type 2) 1 oz

The Type 2 American Silver Eagle features a redesigned reverse by Artistic Infusion Program artist Emily Damstra, introduced in 2021. The new reverse depicts a bald eagle landing with wings outstretched, clutching an oak branch. This updated the reverse design that had been unchanged since 1986. Type 2 Eagles (2021-present) are easily distinguished from Type 1 (1986-2021) by the new reverse design.

American Silver Eagle (Type 2) 1 oz FAQ

What is the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 Silver Eagles?+
Type 1 (1986-2021) features John Mercanti's heraldic eagle reverse. Type 2 (2021+) features Emily Damstra's eagle-landing reverse. The obverse (Walking Liberty design by Adolph Weinman) is unchanged on both types.
Are Type 1 Silver Eagles more valuable than Type 2?+
For bullion purposes, both types are equivalent in silver content and trade at similar premiums. However, 2021-S Type 1 coins (struck early in 2021 before the design change) are collectible and may carry numismatic premiums.
Is the Type 2 Silver Eagle IRA eligible?+
Yes. American Silver Eagles (both types) are specifically authorized for Silver IRA accounts.
How many Silver Eagles are minted per year?+
The US Mint has minted 15-50+ million Silver Eagles annually since 1986, making it the world's best-selling silver bullion coin by total units. 2021 saw over 28 million struck.
