About the American Silver Eagle

The American Silver Eagle is the official silver bullion coin of the United States and the world's best-selling silver coin. Minted by the US Mint since 1986, each coin contains exactly 1 troy oz of .999 fine silver and carries a $1 legal tender face value. The obverse features Adolph Weinman's iconic "Walking Liberty" design, originally used on the half-dollar from 1916 to 1947. The reverse depicts a heraldic eagle and was redesigned in 2021 to feature a bold new eagle design by Emily Damstra. Silver Eagles are minted at facilities in Philadelphia, San Francisco, and West Point. They are the most liquid silver coins for US investors and are widely accepted by all major dealers. The US Mint guarantees each coin's weight, content, and purity. Silver Eagles are IRS-eligible for Silver IRA accounts. Annual mintage has exceeded 45 million ounces in peak demand years.

American Silver Eagle FAQ

Why do American Silver Eagles have higher premiums than other silver coins?+
Silver Eagles command the highest premiums among common silver coins (typically 15–25% over spot) because of their brand recognition, US government backing, legal tender status, and strong domestic demand. During supply crunches, premiums can spike to 50% or more.
Is the American Silver Eagle IRA eligible?+
Yes. The American Silver Eagle is specifically authorized for IRA inclusion by the IRS at its .999 purity level. Most IRA-eligible silver requires .999 purity, and the Eagle meets this standard.
What changed with the 2021 Silver Eagle redesign?+
The reverse design was updated in 2021 for the first time since the coin's introduction. The new design by Emily Damstra shows a bold, perched American eagle holding an oak branch. The obverse Walking Liberty design by Adolph Weinman was retained unchanged.
What is a "type 1" vs "type 2" Silver Eagle?+
Type 1 Silver Eagles (1986–2021) feature the original John Mercanti heraldic eagle reverse. Type 2 Eagles (2021–present) feature Emily Damstra's new eagle design. Both contain the same 1 oz of .999 silver. Type 1 coins do not carry collectible premiums over type 2 for most investment purposes.
