About Terbium
Terbium is one of the most valuable rare earth elements, commanding prices of $700,000-900,000 per metric ton. Like dysprosium, it is used as a performance additive in neodymium permanent magnets, improving coercivity — the ability to resist demagnetization — at high temperatures. Terbium is also used in solid-state lighting (green phosphors in fluorescent lamps and LEDs), sonar systems (in Terfenol-D, a magnetostrictive alloy), and fuel cells. China controls the vast majority of global terbium supply. Production is extremely limited — only about 10 metric tons per year globally. As demand grows with EV motors and wind turbines, supply constraints are likely to intensify. Terbium is consistently listed among the most critical minerals for the clean energy transition by government agencies in the US, EU, and Japan.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is terbium so expensive?
Terbium is one of the rarest rare earth elements, with global annual production of only about 10 metric tons. It is exclusively produced as a minor byproduct of other rare earth mining, primarily in China. Its unique magnetic and optical properties have no practical substitutes.
What is terbium used for?
Key applications include: additive in neodymium permanent magnets for EVs and wind turbines, green phosphors in fluorescent lamps and LEDs, the Terfenol-D magnetostrictive alloy used in naval sonar, and fuel cell components.
How does terbium relate to the energy transition?
Terbium is critical for high-performance EV motors and wind turbine generators that use neodymium magnets. As the world electrifies transport and expands renewable energy, terbium demand is expected to grow significantly.
Is terbium a good investment?
Terbium has extremely limited liquidity — it is not traded on any exchange and is only available through specialist dealers. Price discovery is opaque. It is considered a strategic material rather than an investment vehicle for most investors.
Can terbium be recycled?
End-of-life recycling of terbium from used magnets and lighting is technically possible but commercially limited. Investment in rare earth recycling infrastructure is growing, but currently only a small fraction of terbium is recovered at end of life.
