About Iridium
Iridium is the second-densest element on Earth and one of the rarest metals in the planet's crust. A platinum group metal (PGM) produced almost exclusively as a byproduct of platinum mining in South Africa, iridium is famous for its extreme hardness and resistance to corrosion — even at temperatures above 2,000°C. It is used in spark plugs for aircraft and high-performance engines (lasting far longer than platinum versions), electrodes for industrial electrolysis processes, crucibles for growing single crystals used in electronics and LEDs, and increasingly in proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers for green hydrogen production. The green hydrogen connection is drawing significant investor interest, as iridium's role as an anode catalyst in water electrolysis is currently considered irreplaceable at commercial scale.
Frequently Asked Questions
What makes iridium so valuable?
Iridium is one of the rarest elements on Earth. Annual global production is only about 7-9 metric tons — less than 10 times rarer than gold. Its extreme hardness, corrosion resistance, and high melting point make it uniquely valuable for applications where other metals fail.
What is iridium used for?
Key uses include: aircraft spark plugs and igniter tips, electrodes in industrial chlorine and caustic soda production, crucibles for LED and semiconductor crystal growth, and increasingly as an anode catalyst in green hydrogen electrolyzers.
Why is iridium important for green hydrogen?
Iridium is the primary catalyst used in proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers, the technology widely considered best-suited for large-scale green hydrogen production. Growing investment in hydrogen infrastructure is a major demand driver.
How volatile is the iridium price?
Iridium is one of the most price-volatile metals. It traded below $500/oz for years before surging to over $6,000/oz in 2021 on green hydrogen speculation, then correcting significantly. The small market size means large moves on modest supply/demand shifts.
Where is iridium mined?
South Africa accounts for approximately 85% of global iridium production, primarily from the Bushveld Igneous Complex. Small amounts come from Russia and Zimbabwe.
